THE COMMON MAN

I feared that I could not relate
To all who read the thoughts I state.
So I began a search to understand
The mind of The Common Man.

Each I approached, I was to find
Had no common nor simple mind.
And after years of tireless search
I first perceived Mankind's lofty perch.

There is no Common Man nor Womankind.
Of mill workers, lawyers, doctors, clerks
And all others I could bring to mind
None fit the name, The Common Man.

With all our differences,
Cultures, colors and pace,
It seems that one and all
We're a most uncommon race.

Dear Tal:
I read your book of poetry, Spirits in the Wind, with enjoyment. This past Christmas a friend of mine died. Only in his mid-thirties it hardly seemed fair. I sent flowers and then attended the service. I attached a copy of your poem "A Passing" instead of a card. At the service I was approached by his parents who asked if they could read that poem at the service as a eulogy. They did so. Afterwards, I was approached by many people with praise for your poem. I explained that a friend of mine had written it. I hope this usage was okay. I love your book.

Dear Tal:
I read your book of poetry, Spirits in the Wind, with interest. Many passages brought tears to my eyes. Afterwards, I laid it on a coffee table in my library. A few months passed and my mother visited from out of state. While I was in court she read your book. She asked if I could get her a copy which you provided. She said it was a most inspirational and enjoyable book. A couple of weeks after she left I received a letter from her. She explained that your book had inspired her to write a story about a trip our family took when my brother and sister and I were just kids. I read her story and once again had tears in my eyes. I typed her story and printed it in a suitable format and have given it as a gift to family members who we visited on that trip. It includes, as mother had, that your book gave her the inspiration to record that event.

Dear Tal:
You gave me a copy of your book, Spirits in the Wind, during your visit to my resort. I’m not much into poetry so left it on my coffee table. One night, a couple of months after breaking up with my girlfriend of several years, I was sitting alone and opened your book at random. The poem I opened to seemed to have been written just for me. It got me out of the depression I had been in. I decided to go out for dinner and quit feeling sorry for myself. I ran into Shelley, a girl I had met on various occasions but never gone out with. It turns out that we are really perfect for each other and now we are living together and planning marriage. We both feel we owe our relationship to you. On many nights we sit together and read portions of your book aloud to our mutual enjoyment. Keep writing.

Dear Tal:
You gave me a copy of your book, Spirits in the Wind. As you know I am divorced. I live in Reno and my son John Aaron, 14, lives in Salt Lake. He picked up your book while here and read part of it. When he returned home we began spending more time on the telephone. Each time we spoke we would read one of your poems and then discuss its hidden meanings. We both feel that your book has brought us closer together even though we are 500 miles apart. Keep writing.

Dear Tal:
I wanted to thank you for your book of poetry. As you know my grandmother recently died and I returned to the Philippines, where I was raised, for her funeral. I was asked to give the eulogy at the funeral. I hope that it is okay that I read your poem "A Passing" for that speech. It gave the perfect words for the occasion. Afterwards I was complemented by all of my relatives for my choice.
