THE SMILING LIE

This morning I spied on you,
And tried to turn away
Before you saw that I knew.

The tiny tear slid silently from your eye.
And, as it ran down your cheek,
My resolve left me and I, too, became weak.

We’ve been together now for ten days,
Learning each other’s secret ways,
And, now we part, for the first time, as lovers.

I thought I’d leave and perhaps deceive
You, my love, with a smile.
But you couldn’t lie and now neither can I.

As I turn away from you
Another tear glides slowly down.
This time from my eye.
